Texaport helps architects build a better future

McLaren Murdoch & Hamilton (MM-H) is an award-winning architectural practice with offices in Edinburgh and Perth. Founded in 1967, the firm’s extensive portfolio covers projects across the commercial and residential sectors, as well as student residential, public sector, leisure and ecclesiastical work. MM-H is also Scotland’s leading motor retail architect, working the likes of Eastern Western Motor Group, John Clark Motor Group, Vertu Motors Plc and Parks of Hamilton covering an extensive range of major vehicle brands.

The firm’s other major clients include Downing Developments, Reeder Ness Developments Ltd, S1 Developments, 83S Ltd, Perth & Kinross Council, NHS Tayside, Edinburgh University, and Changeworks.

MM-H initially approached Texaport looking for our support to address their concerns about IT security and to help them modernise their systems through the implementation of new cloud services.

We moved quickly to support our client by implementing the Azure Active Directory, a cloud platform which helps businesses bring new solutions to life across their IT systems with a strong focus on Cyber security. Through the Azure implementation we enhanced MM-H’s data security by putting in place multi-factor authentication processes and standardising policies across PCs, laptops and all other devices used by the firm’s people.

To further enhance MM-H’s data security we also installed an effective antivirus solution across its systems and implemented (RMM) Remote management and monitoring Solution, fully-featured, secure and cost-effective cloud-based platform which enables Texaport to provide ongoing remote IT support to our client. Additionally, we installed password management software and put in place a stringent email filtering service which provides the highest detection rates on the market.

To further support the MM-H team we then delivered our award-winning security awareness training.

With their security issues robustly addressed, Texaport then focused on MM-H’s aging hardware which needed refreshing. We worked closely with them to understand their business requirements whilst developing a business continuity and disaster recovery plan and then assisted them in specifying and acquiring PC’s that were up to the challenge of dealing with the team’s heavy day to day workload. A key consideration of this process was MM-H’s use of industry specific software AutoCAD, which is very processor and graphics heavy, and ensuring their devices were capable of operating effectively while utilising this programme. A further issue was to ensure devices were appropriate for the firm’s colleagues who frequently work externally and often from remote locations across Scotland.

As a fully accredited Cyber Essentials certification provider, Texaport was also able to support MM-H through the Cyber Essentials process providing assurances to the firm’s client base about its data security stature. Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective certification that guards a business or organisation against a wide range of common cyberattacks. Overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre and GCHQ, this standard is designed to provide base level security controls for businesses of all sizes and is a pre-requisite for any company wishing to apply for government and public body tenders.

With Covid restrictions about to be reduced while we were initially working with MM-H, we also focused on modernising the networks at the firm’s Perth and Edinburgh premises to enable a smooth transition for colleagues when they were able to return to office-based working.  This included moving our client’s entire server infrastructure into the cloud which could be accessed via a secure virtual private network (VPN) and creating a disaster recovery plan with regular data backups for key colleagues as well as the firm’s cloud server.

Stewart Graham, (Director) at McLaren Murdoch & Hamilton said: “Texaport has played a pivotal role in supporting our business by modernising our IT systems, including migration to the cloud, and enhancing our levels of data security. This support has helped ensure we are at the head of the curve as a leading architectural practice, able to deliver the highest service standards to our clients and ensure our colleagues are fully connected wherever they are working throughout Scotland.”
