The past decade has seen an exponential growth in email usage and communication. With around 4.3 billion email accounts in the world and over 269 billion emails sent and received every day! As such spam email has been growing, and “Phishing” has begun to enter the public consciousness.

A phishing attack is an email sent to an individual designed to look like it is from someone else with a couple of potential malicious intentions. Common attacks are familiar to users such as “HMRC” or Tax emails, scammers seeking money or fake service emails from organisations like Apple or Microsoft. This kind of attack is dangerous to consumers as so many of them are sent each day with users being unaware that they are the target of such fraudulent attacks. For businesses, these attacks could be more targeted to convincing users to make payments or send sensitive data outside of the organisation.

A strong Cyber Security approach will involve “Email Filtering” whereby the sender and recipient(s) are scanned for authenticity (i.e. is it really Apple, HMRC or a client) as well as having the content and attachments validated. The vast majority of viruses which infect computers are transmitted by phishing or malicious emails.
